Why I Stepped Down as Sr. Pastor

This past Sunday (05/05/13) I stepped down as Pastor of the Alton Church in Birmingham after only eight months. It came as a shock to the congregation. Some close friends of mine knew the personal inner struggle I had with this role, and my resignation came as no surprise. However to the majority this was somewhat shocking news to be stepping down so abruptly.

The purpose of this post is to be clear as to the reasoning for my early departure from this local church.

First of all, no one "ran me off." In fact, the people of the church were completely kind, generous and gracious to our family. The church people accepted my wife and children with love and open arms and many great, lasting relationships have been forged in this short time. They accepted me as well, and most all went along with my cracked-pot ideas (my term). Naturally, there was resistance to some of the change, but these were openly discussed, debated and resolved.

Secondly, this was a personal decision.

The decision to step down was made prior to Easter, and I took the following weeks leading up to my resignation to rethink, pray and find peace before making it final. As a side note, I found it quite striking that the Pope stepped down recently as well. Benedict was the first Pope to resign the position in 600 years.  It struck me as odd as well to learn that the overseer of our denomination gave his resignation this past Monday..., the same week I resigned. I don't know if there was something in the air, but resigning seemed to be vogue.

Which leads me to my reason(s) for resigning...

Ministry, preaching the Word, praying for people, making a positive impact in peoples' lives and discipling followers of Christ are the elements that really make me tick as a minister.  The details of being in the ministry and the huge cloud of burden that follows you everywhere you go is what so discourages me.

There's an element of pastoring a congregation, as good as that congregation may be (which is the case at Alton - good people), that is completely stressing and worrisome. I found that this burden didn't cause me to pull more closely to Christ as one might imagine, but I started pulling away. Bible study, prayer, sermon prep all became a worrisome thing to me because having become fixated on what I perceived people wanting instead of focusing on what Christ desires.  I had it backwards.  People pleasing is a bitter poison that drains God's ministers and places said minister in bondage. Unfortunately, I never properly separated the man from the ministry taking anything and everything very personally.  I didn't want pastoring to change me, my temperament and approachable personality. I didn't want to become calloused and shut off from people as I've seen happen with some pastors.

I became bogged down with budgets, music, problems, programs, offenses of others, unfaithful people, people leaving to go elsewhere, murmurs, complaints, formats of service, worship styles, hospital visits, full time work, full time family (my priority after loving God), the distance we traveled from home to church, my own paranoia and plain old-downright tiredness. There seemed to be no relief in sight and I let that thought of hopelessness get the best of me.

I'm not saying this is okay or even right. I'm not justifying anything either.  I'm just saying that this all factors in to why I stepped down. I'm not even saying that I went about it the right way.  I'm sure the Pharisees will line up to privately and publicly jeer, throw stones and question my trust in God. And that's okay..., I questioned it too. Pastoring is a tough work for tough men with thick skin. I am neither tough nor thick skinned.

Finally, I am, however, grateful for the opportunity to have tried. I'm thankful for all the friends who traveled with me through my times of despair that went unnoticed on the surface. And I love God for teaching me a thing or two about who I am and, more importantly, about who He is.

I'm not stepping away from ministry per se, but I am stepping back to give God space to help me deal with my insecurities and trust issues in a toned down role at a local church in Bessemer under a great Pastor.

I love God so much. This hasn't changed. And greater than this is the fact that His love for me hasn't changed either. I'm not junk being discarded. I'm gold being refined in the fire by the Master.

Thanks to everyone for your continued love. Any other rumor about my stepping down is just that... Rumor. Any speculation as to other reasons I stepped down is just that... Speculation. I can't stop either, and that's okay. If you hear the rumor that I can't hack it as a Pastor, well... that one may be true. :) I still love Christ and His calling and I know that He's still working on me.

Thoughts From My Journal on What Calvin Miller May Be Doing at This Moment...

This morning from my journal: I was drawn to thinking of Dr. Calvin Miller, author, pastor and professor, who died this year, August 9th, 2012, at the age of 75.  His written works include The Singer Trilogy, The Celtic Path of Prayer, Life is Mostly Edges, Sermon Maker, Into the Depths and his most recent (that touched and helped me beyond any other) Letters to a Young Pastor.  This isn't a complete list of his works, but a good start.  He also has written several children's book and many poems.  Much thanks to Pastor Roger Daniel of Caffee Junction Church of God for introducing me to this great man and writer.  Though I never met him in person, he retired from Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, Alabama where I live, and he lived in Trussville just a few miles from where I now pastor.  It seems that we were destined to meet, though it never happened, but one day I'm confident, in Christ, we will.  On the day of his death, when I saw the Tweets concerning his passing... I couldn't help but cry.

Here's the entry from my journal dated Tuesday, November 20th, 2012...

For some reason I'm thinking about Calvin Miller this morning. A man I don't know except through his writings.

What a writer and thinker he was here upon this earthly realm.  What a writer and thinker he must now be on that eternal shore where he is no longer inhibited by the limits of mere human expression.  His mind has now been unlocked as the blinding scales of our humanity have been peeled away by Christ's own fingers.

Some might think it absurd to imagine that in Heaven there is writing.  I imagine that the best writing is done there.  Here we're only given a glimpse of the writing potential that exists when no prohibition is made to the artistic expression of such a beautiful form of communication as when the mind has finally been liberated to righteousness, holiness and unhindered perception, now having an eternal vantage point.

Oh the words Calvin now has access to that express such fullness of concepts no human tongue has knowingly uttered; except, perhaps, in some form of charismatic spattering that most of the Christian world condemns as emotional ecstasy.  Those unknown languages, are at his full disposal now, and the concepts he once struggled to string together here (oh that I "struggled" as he) now flow in holy ecstasy expressing the beauty and grandeur he knows now so vibrantly.  Down here, he only could guess at the grandeur he penned in books published on dirty, used presses.  There the grandeur is now bathing him in golden warmth where his soul is satisfied, and his writings printed in angelic hues of electric light on parchment peeled from Divine Presence.

I imagine him with some holy pen (holy because everything in Heavenly is illuminated by light that emanates from God's own Son so that it can be seen and grasped by spiritual hands) feverishly writing of all the new things his eyes have been awakened to.  Perhaps one complete sentence there, though no time at all passes, has taken him here 10,000 years to scribe.

He probably shares in a writers guild with those passed away writers such as Paul, with his letters; Isaiah and Jeremiah, with their oracles; David and his son Solomon, with their poetry and praise; Moses and Esther, with their stories of Presence; Spurgeon, with sermon; Charles Wesley, with song; Tolkien and Lewis, with sheer genius.  I hope, also, that Oscar Wilde is with them having now learned the craft of grace.  He pens now not from the perception of hedonism and sensual exploitation, but from the perception of perfect Love he found on his death bed of sickness from a life wrecked with human taking and grief now redeemed by glowing, piercing beams of grace.  I think they're all, also, waiting in anticipation for their sons Lucado, Zacharias, Chan and Platt to arrive.

I hope they'll let me sit in on such an eternally, exquisite guild one day.  Not because I'm ever to become an "accomplished" writer such as they, but because I've cried out to the Spirit in my journals of desperate weakness.  In those cries, I hope, something of those inexpressible ecstasies spilled unknowingly onto my pages in groanings that were not written in any audibly recognizable tones of intellectual purpose.

I'm not quite sure what turned my think this morning to Miller, but, for whatever reason, the thought of his writing finally being loosed in Heaven gives hope that Spirit filled writing will be loosed on Earth as well.  The writings that Calvin now engages must be wonderfully expressive and fully complete in a way his human hand never achieved.  I think of him spilling his liberated heart out in divine poetry that no human here can read, but one day, by the heavenly sea, we'll recline and read and marvel still at the works of the Spirit through Calvin Miller.

Need Not Thirst // Project 2013

Project 2013 of Need Not Thirst begins with a story of teenage disappointment...

As a recent high school graduate, going to South Africa to spread the gospel with Teen Mania was just as much a matter of fact as was knowing that my acne was now going to completely clear up having exited the hallowed halls of high school.

I heard of Teen Mania at an event called Acquire the Fire at Ball State University in Indiana.  It was my answer to God's calling on my life..., to be a missionary.  So at the appointed time during the event, I found the Teen Mania booth and signed up to go to South Africa.  I came home stoked!  A few weeks later my South Africa info package was received in the mail. I took the package and opened it with baited breath.  Immediately, I began devouring all the information that I had been sent.  (I don't remember clearly, but I may have immediately put the Teen Mania t-shirt they had sent me on over my clothes I was wearing.)  I sat there, heart fluttering and imagining all the people who were going to come to Christ because I had finally reached the shores of South Africa.  I had this sense that they had been waiting on me to get there.  As I kept pouring over all the information, time lines, vaccine requirements, departure dates, etc., etc. I came across another sheet with a bottom line... .  Below this bottom line was a number.  And, with this number came a symbol.  A dollar symbol.

My jaw dropped when the numbers came into focus..., $3500.00, and I had only a few months to raise that amount!!! That number doesn't seem today to be as large as it once was.  When I was eighteen and pimple-faced, however, that figure might as well have read, "the National Deficit."

Needless to say, my feeble attempts to raise that amount of money ended in grave disappointment.  I felt too embarrassed to ask people for their money, and, if I were honest -- as opposed to all the lying I've been doing in this blog post?? -- the enormity of the amount made me lazy.  There was another part of me too that thought, "If God needs me there so badly, He'll send the money to me." -- well, I never received a letter.

But that isn't to say that He wasn't acting on my behalf.  In fact, I believe my disappointment was His grand design.  I have come to believe in these last few months that my disappointment had a purpose.  And that purpose was to evoke action from me, at 34 years of age, to act on behalf of someone who God does want to send to South Africa, Uganda, Sudan, India or wherever that may be.

With Need Not Thirst, one of our two focus points of this ministry is to provide "eternal water" so that thirsty people "Need not Thirst" again (John 4).  By December 31st, of 2013, our goal is to provide a scholarship for at least one person who thinks God may be leading them down the path of foreign mission work. We want to provide an opportunity as well as foster God's calling in someone's life, by removing the hurdle of money and sending them on their way.  Hurdles aren't always bad, in fact they make us stronger.  But money shouldn't hinder some young kid from launching out into the possibility of Kingdom service either.

More information will be coming via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/neednotthirst and on this blog as to how we intend to raise the money and, through much prayer, select the candidate to receive Need Not Thirst's first ever Mission Scholarship through Project 2013.

This story begins with teenage disappointment, but it ends with a renewed mission to send laborers into the field.  Now that I'm 34... still graduated from high school... and a few less pimples than back then, Need Not Thirst is sending a budding missionary to a nation who needs Jesus... will you be that person to carry this "eternal water" to a thirsty people?  If not, then maybe you'll be that person to help send them.  Help us to pray, support us by giving... and for goodness sakes help me find the Clearasil. This is becoming ridiculous...

Youcef Nadarkhani's Execution Expected Wednesday or Thursday

Youcef Nadarkhani is expected to be executed as early as Wednesday (9/28/11) or Thursday (9/29/11) according to several sources.

As discussed earlier, Youcef's case was to be re-examined, Sunday, September 25th, 2011.  During this court appearance, Youcef was given the opportunity to recant his Christian faith, to which he responded,

"Repent means to return. What should I return to? To the blasphemy that I had before my faith in Christ?"
"To the religion of your ancestors, Islam," the judge replied, according to the American Center for Law & Justice.
"I cannot," Nadarkhani said.
Youcef has been given four "opportunities" to recant and escape his death sentence of being hanged by the Iranian government.  He has stood strong for Christ telling the court each time that "he cannot." Many are expecting his execution to be enacted at any moment given the unpredictable nature of the Iranian government.

FoxNews.com has also reported today (9/28/11) on Youcef's current status and has also included statements by House Speaker John Boehner.  Boehner had this to say,
[Youcef's case is] "distressing for people of every country and creed."
The State Department declined to comment to FoxNews concerning Youcef's case.

Please be in prayer for Youcef, his family, and the underground church in Iran as well as for the nation itself.  Today and the next few days are critical.  Urgent prayers are needed on his behalf as well as on the behalf of all persecuted peoples world wide.

Youcef Nadarkhani's Case to be Re-examined...

Youcef Nadarkhani: Iran
This morning (Friday, September 16th, 2011) The Voice of the Martyr's updated their Facebook status to report that Youcef Nadarkhani's case will be "re-examined" on Sunday, September 25th, 2011.  Here's what their status update said:
Youcef Nadarkhani is in an Iranian prison under a death sentence for apostasy.  Court is to "re-examine" his case on Sept. 25. Pray for justice for Pastor Youcef.
Please pray for Pastor Youcef.  In previous updates of mine, I have outlined how I've been praying but I encourage you to pray as God's Spirit would lead you.  Pray for his justice, his salvation, his wife, his children; pray for the underground church in Iran and pray that those that don't know Christ in that country would be saved.

The Nadarkhani's
I can't imagine what Youcef is going through and am so thankful that we get to worship freely here in America.  However, we shouldn't take these freedoms for granted.  Ever.  As an encouragement, don't get comfortable and complacent in your relationship with Christ.  Always push for closeness, even when it's easier to just coast along.  Reflect on the realities of our relationship with Christ; this world isn't our home, so don't cling to it like it's all we have.  Embrace the suffering of others in prayer and petition to God on their behalf.  Take nothing of our spirituality for granted, but be happy in Him and find a deep inner joy that comes only in knowing Christ and that, in Him, He has saved us from our sins!  We now are His, if we trust in Him.

Asia Bibi: Pakistan
Please keep praying for Youcef Nadarkhani.  Please keep praying for Asia Bibi as I have updated information in the past on Facebook concerning her situation.  Don't stop calling out to God on their behalf! These, sadly, aren't the only people being severely persecuted, by the way.  They are the ones that, for some reason, I've felt a personal need to pray for specifically.  I keep praying for all the others, but pray for these in particular as God's Spirit leads me.  Prayer is the key in all that they endure.

Youcef Nadarkhani Update

Youcef Nadarkhani
I've scoured the web looking for any updated information on Youcef Nadarkhani and as it currently stands there's no new information that I was able to find.

Pastor Youcef remains in prison, having had his death sentence annulled for the time being by the Iranian Supreme Court siting insufficient background evidence to prove that he was in fact a declared, practicing Muslim prior to his conversion to Christ.  His case was then remanded back to the lower court in Rast where they are waiting on Youcef to recant his Christian faith, as well as to find sufficient evidence to prove to the court that he was a declared Muslim.  As it stands, if he does recant all charges will be dropped.  However, if he does not, then he most likely will see the death sentence reinstated by the lower court.  The Supreme Court agrees with the death sentence, but sited procedural flaws in proving he was once a Muslim.  Had they been able to prove this, then he would have been hanged in 20 days.

The Nadarkhanis
Youcef's lawyer, Mohammed Ali Dadkhah, was later sentenced to nine years in prison and ten years of not being able to practice law or teach in the Iranian universities.  He was charged for "actions and propaganda against the Islamic regime."

Youcef has been imprisoned since October of 2009.  He is 33 years old, married abd has two young sons.

According to Voice of the Martyrs, they had this to say about his prison stay,
The pastor is imprisoned in Lakan prison, where authorities have used various methods, including medication, to [attempt to] convert him back to Islam.
Please pray for Youcef and his family, and as well for Iran to become open to the gospel.  Pray that change will come to this nation through Christ.  I've prayed for Youcef daily and have been asking God to comfort Youcef and give him peace and to strengthen him against their attempts to convert him.  I've prayed that God would use him so strongly while in prison to preach to guards as well as fellow inmates.

It's easy for us to go about our daily routines oblivious to the fact that the church is severely persecuted abroad.  We should pray for our brothers and sisters and become co-laborers and co-sufferers for them through prayer to Christ.

I encourage you to pray also for Iran that it would become open to the gospel.  We must pray that when God does open the country that we too will be ready to leave everything, every comfort, luxury and presumed security, if necessary, to take the gospel in love and service to this nation.  We must be ready to go should He call.  Please pray.

Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani on Foxnews.com **MUST READ ARTICLE***

Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani's story has made the front page of Foxnews.com today!  The awareness being raised is refreshing, knowing that the world will have to take note that Christians are being persecuted for their faith in Christ.

This should also be a lesson to us in America.  We praise God for the liberty that we have, yet so often disregard.  It's a sad state when we can worship so freely and minister to our communities so openly and lack the passion to care to do so.  God help us... our brothers and sisters are being beaten and killed for the sake of Christ and we (I!) are more worried about everything else in this life than worshiping Christ!

Keep praying for Youcef.  Pray for God's will to be done in Iran. Pray that the Name of Jesus would blaze across the nation of Iran.  The church has historically thrived under persecution, so pray the same will be so wherever our brothers and sisters suffer.

"Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ..." Philippians 3:8 (NLT)

Youcef Nadarkhani Update...

Voice of the Martyrs is reporting that Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani's death sentence has been temporarily repealed by the Iranian Supreme Court.  This reportedly happened Saturday, July 2nd, 2011.  The Supreme Court had earlier upheld a lower court decision and Youcef was to be hanged (see the above length for more information on the details of Youcef's situation).

According to Voice of the Martyrs (VOM), ""The supreme court has annulled the death sentence and sent the case back to the court in Rasht, asking the accused to repent," Mohammad Ali Dadkhah said."

It's not clear what will happen next if Youcef doesn't recant his faith.  It seems that they're repealing his death sentence in order to give him another chance to recant his faith in Christ and will then spare his life.

VOM is also reporting that Sunday, July 3rd, 2011 Youcef's lawyer was arrested and has been sentenced to nine years in prison, along with a ten year ban on practicing law or teaching at any university.  His charge is reported by VOM to be "actions and propaganda against the Islamic regime".

Please pray for Youcef, his lawyer and the families involved, as well as the church in Iran.

On Facebook, I've been posting several articles and a letter written by Youcef.  I want to bring awareness of what our brothers and sisters are enduring abroad for the sake of Christ's Name.  Please pray that the Holy Spirit would give Youcef the strength to retain his faith, not recant, but boldly proclaim the Gospel by his unrelenting stand for Christ.

Please also pray for the persecuted church everywhere.  Youcef and his wife and lawyer, sadly, are only one of many families that are being persecuted for their faith in Jesus.

Please visit the Voice of the Martyrs site to see many others who are persecuted as well.  This site has much information and many resources available for your use and interests.

Please, let's pray together for all of our brothers and sisters, and that through everything Jesus would be glorified.

The Manhattan Declaration organization has launched a new website with more resources and information.  I encourage you to read the declaration and sign it, if you feel so inclined.  It has nearly a half-million signatures so far, and is going a long way to unite Christians - across denomination - based on "common ground" issues that are fundamental to Christianity.

Emerge... Twentysomething Ministry...

We recently re-designed our College & Career Bible Study to take on a new form... yes, a coffee shop. Of course, what else right?

We have young college students, the budding young minds of tomorrow, who need an outlet where they can look smart and cool and studious and feel connected in a bohemian-vagabond-artsy sense so we started a Thursday evening coffee shop worship service called Emerge... each week @ 7:30pm.

Emerge features acoustic praise and worship music by our Emerge Worship band lead by Aaron Griffin (vocals & guitar), Brett Hand (bass), Steven Garmon (drums, djembe) and Joseph Pierson (guitar). We also feature - twice a month - worship leaders from the area who come in a do an acoustic worship set; the likes of Kenneth Belue, Cody Stutts, Rock Sandretto and Chace Austin Butler who will be with us October 8th. We host an open mic night every last Thursday of the month and I provide a teaching or discussion each week.

The purpose of this ministry, other than the obvious ministery to this group and giving them an outlet of worship expression, is to be a community for the community in our area. One recent, yet repeated, statistic is that 85% of church-ed kids who graduate high school will actually leave the church most of them indefinitely. Only a small precentage will ever return.

Most average sized churches (65 members +/-) in our area don't have a consistent outreach to this particular group. Our near-future plans are to begin to partner with area churches to provide Emerge as an outlet for their high school graduates and twentysomethings.

My thinking on this is that if we all have a little, and we all put it together, we can all have a lot. (I know that sounds a little socialist, but in this case it's not so bad... anything we can do to reach our liberal college brothers, right?!?! Trust me, we won't be passing out Theories of Surplus Value as our weekly reader. LOL)

If you're in the area and would like to talk further about coming together on this, then I would love to get with you. You may leave a comment here - just your name and church will suffice - and I will look you up and get with you. I will be eventually getting around to each church, but don't wait on me!

Peace and blessings!

Superman Comic

According to a Fox News article , the first comic book ever to introduce Superman is to be auctioned today. Only a hundred copies are known to exist and are estimated at $126K! This #1 edition is expected to go much higher than that.

The guy selling the comic bought it when he was nine years old after begging his father for $0.35... I think this will be a good return on his father's investment. He will finally be able to pay his father back the $0.35 he borrowed as a nine year old.

The dad should charge interest especially given the fact we are in a recession and needs to take every opportunity to take advantage of this crisis. :)

Good luck auctioneers! Happy bidding!

Speaking at Cottondale Community Church

I will be speaking at the Cottondale Community Church, Sunday February 15th at 6pm. The Revolve! Worship Band will be providing music that night as well.

I'm really looking forward to being there that night and appreciate Pastor Ron Martin inviting me to speak to their youth.

I asked Pastor Ron to think back about fifteen years ago and asked him if he ever thought he'd be asking the guy whom he kicked out of church camp to come speak to his youth group? I did beg Ron to not send me home and that I would behave the rest of the week because I knew my dad would probably kill me! Ron obliged and let me stay, oh, yeah - did I mention that it was the first day of camp? Anyway, thanks for saving a life Pastor Ron! I'm sure my kids appreciate it!
